A Breath of Spring?

Wiarton Willie has forecast an early spring for Southern Ontario. Many of us hope he is right!

In fact, it might be possible that more people pray about groundhogs and spring than they do for Candlemas? Also on February 2nd, Candlemas is a Christian celebration based on the day when the Virgin Mary first took Jesus, her first born, to the synagogue elders as a 40-day old infant.

In Ontario in 2025 there are over 16 million people, of which half are Christian… Well, I think more than half of Ontarians are praying for an early spring!

The February 2nd celebration of Groundhog Day is an older custom as well. It was first brought to North America in approximately 1887 by Pennsylvania Germans, but was also celebrated by the Ancient Romans. Before the Roman Empire became officially Christianized by the Emperor Constantine in the year 313 CE, it was called Februalia, and was a festival of purification.

In Europe the badger and hedgehog have been used rather than groundhogs on February 2nd as animal prognosticators. Fortunately, Wiarton Willie did see his shadow this year, which means fewer than six more weeks of winter.
